Sewing News About
New Things and Familiar Oldies

I love reading magazines and visiting websites to look for sewing news... you know... interesting information regarding new sewing notions and products on the market, improvements made to favorite sewing notions, as well as new free projects offered by various companies. Here's where I share my favorite finds.

Sewing Apps for I-Phones!

Did you know there are several neat applications available for your cell phone that pertain to sewing? I didn't. Not until about a week ago. Thank you Barbara Wyatt for the super informative article in the October/November issue of Sew News Magazine where she writes about 10 sewing apps currently available.

Most of these apps are designed for the I-Phone and run from .99 to $8.99. Several are free.

My favorites are below:

Sewing Kit. There's a fee limited version and a full version for $8.99. You enter the pattern name/number of patterns you already have, plus any additional notes from the pattern package you feel necessary. The application then creates your personal pattern library. So...when you are out shoppping and come across a fabric you just have to buy, the app pulls up photos of the patterns in your libary that can be used with that particular type of fabric and you can determine how much yardage you need, notions required, etc. right there on your cell phone.

I also like the one called Fabric U. It gives you detailed information about various fabrics, including care instructions and suggested uses.

Another useful sewing app is the Fabric Converter which helps you calculate yardage if you are buying fabric that's a different width than shown on your pattern.

And let's not overlook this one! Fabric Stash where you can build a portable library of your personal stash of fabric and other things! No guessing about what you already have at home when you are out shopping and suddenly get inspiration for a new project.

As soon as my "smartphone" contract is up, I'm upgrading to an I-Phone.

Still Going On: Operation Alzheimer's Prevention

Sew News magazine has joined with The Mountain States Division of Life Care Centers of America and hopes to raise $5,000 to be donated to the Alzheimer's Association in 2011 by auctioning small lap quilts made by home sewers like YOU! Lap sized quilts (approx. 32" x 40") are needed. You can make the design patterns found in the magazine or you can make any quilt design of your choosing.

If you want to participate, send completed quilts to:
