An Easy Sew Tissue Holder
for All Sewing Levels

Easy sew tissue holders can be found on numerous sewing sites so I decided to show you how I make mine! It's fast. It's fun. Leave them simple or make them decorative.

Making tissue holders is a great way to get rid of all those pieces of scrap fabric and trims that you just can't bring yourself to throw away and they make really good, inexpensive gifts for friends and family.

Want to take your easy sew tissue holder a step further? Box the sides for a better fit. I'll show you how below.

What you'll need

A rectangle "pattern" that is 7-1/2 inches wide and 6 inches long. You can cut one from a piece of paper.

A piece of fabric large enough to accomodate your paper pattern. Just remember... if the fabric has a pattern that needs to run in a specific direction (like words, etc.), be sure to lay your paper pattern down appropriately. If you mess up, no big deal! We're most likely using scrap pieces anyway!

Matching or coordinating thread.

Your choice of trim (if you want to decorate your tissue holder). Trim can be ribbon, eyelet lace, ric-rac, little buttons, etc. Trim can also be decorative stitching from the many choices found on most sewing machines. If you're into machine embroidery, you can also embellish your project that way.

Let's Make Our Easy Sew
Tissue Holder!

Step One:

Using your tissue holder paper pattern, cut your fabric. Some people cut an additional piece to line their holder. I say... WHY? Who sees the inside? If the fabric you are using is really lightweight, you can cut a piece of iron-on interfacing the same size and fuse it to the wrong side of the fabric which will add some weight.

Step Two:

With the right side down, fold down 1/2" on each short side. Press if necessary. Turn fabric right side up and stitch approx 3/8" from the folded edge. (If you prefer to see where the raw edge is, you can stitch with the right side of the fabric down.)

This finished edge will become the opening of our tissue holder when we're finished.

See the photo.

We're not finished yet. I just want you to be able to see what I'm referring to.

Here comes the fun part!

Step Three:

Let's decorate! Here is where we can really dress it up. Turn the tissue holder right side up and lay different ribbons and trims along the now finished edge. Decorate both sides or decorate one side. Decorate on top or decorate under the edge. See examples below.

GET THE IDEA?

Once you decide how you are going to decorate your easy sew tissue holder, attach your trim by sewing it to the fabric. Remember that these edges will be folded to the center later to make the opening for the tissue pack. This is also the time for any decorative stitches you may want to add OR for any machine embroidery embellishments.

Step Four:

Let's sew the sides together! Lay your fabric right side up and fold each finished side so they meet each other in the middle. Don't let the edges overlap nor let them gap. You want them to meet evenly. Pin the edges and sew using about a 1/2" seam allowance. (Ok, that's what I use...it's not critical, you can always come back and adjust this if necessary.)

Step Five:

Trim the corners... just don't cut the stitches. You do not need to trim away excess from the seam allowance. Turn your now finished easy to sew tissue holder inside out, use a blunt pointed object to push out the corners and insert a tissue pack.

There! YOU ARE DONE and it looks like the first photo shown on this page.

NOW WASN'T THAT EASY!

Want to Box the Corners
of your Tissue Holder?

Your easy sew tissue holder is now done. You can stop right there; however, for a better fit... let's box the corners!

Guess what! If you have ever made a simple purse or tote, you already know how to do this!

Before you turn the tissue holder inside out, pinch and flatten the point of each corner. Sew across the corner. This photo may not help you see what I'm referring to very well.

For a better idea of what I'm doing here, please look at the photos from my Placemat Purse instructions. Those photos will help you... really, they will.

And heeere's your finished easy sew tissue holder complete with boxed edges. Now aren't you the clever one!

Below are a couple more examples to look at. There are so many different ways to dress these up.

I hope you have fun with this project. It's easy enough for beginning sewers and children (with supervision of course).
